Patrick Jane and the Mystery at Redwood Farm
A gloomy morning at the California Bureau of Investigation (CBI), Patrick Jane was enjoying his favorite cup of tea while chatting with Lisbon. Suddenly, the door burst open as a local police officer from the small town of Redwood appeared, bringing news of a bizarre case.
The Crime Scene
The victim, Richard Harper, a well-known farm owner, was found dead in the main house of his farm. The death appeared to be a suicide: Richard was seated in a chair, a gun in his hand, and a suicide note beside him. However, the officer was suspicious, as Richard was an optimistic man with no signs of depression.
CBI was called in. Lisbon led the team, and Jane, as always, couldn’t resist the allure of a mysterious case. He hopped into the car with his trademark half-smile.
The First Clues
At the scene, Jane examined the room carefully. He scrutinized how the gun was placed in Richard’s hand, the handwriting in the suicide note, and the position of the chair. Standing silent for a moment, he turned to Lisbon:
- “This isn’t a suicide,” Jane declared confidently.
Lisbon raised an eyebrow. “And you’re sure of that because…?”
Jane pointed at the note. “This handwriting doesn’t belong to Richard. From the family photos on the walls, you can see his writing is bold and confident. This note was written by someone insecure.”
Lisbon signaled the forensics team to investigate further. Meanwhile, Jane wandered around the house, noticing minute details others overlooked. He adjusted a crooked painting, studied the muddy boots by the door, and finally stepped outside.
The Mysterious Neighbor
While Lisbon questioned Richard’s family, Jane wandered off to speak with an elderly neighbor, Mrs. Martha. She lived nearby and was close to the victim. During their conversation, Mrs. Martha mentioned seeing a strange car parked outside the farm a few days before, though she couldn’t identify the visitor.
“Did he have any enemies?” Jane asked.
Mrs. Martha hesitated before mentioning Daniel, Richard’s cousin. The two had been in heated disputes over the farm’s ownership since the death of Richard’s parents.
A Suspect and a Psychological Game
Jane and the team turned their attention to Daniel Harper, who lived in a shabby house nearby. Daniel denied any involvement in Richard’s death, but Jane noticed a faint bruise on his wrist, suggesting a recent struggle.
To test him, Jane devised a bold plan. He organized a memorial service for Richard at the farm, inviting all his friends and family. During the service, Jane theatrically read aloud a “newly discovered” letter from Richard, which supposedly revealed he had left all his assets to an unexpected loved one.
Daniel immediately lost his composure, erupting in anger and accusing Jane of fabricating the letter. In his rage, he inadvertently revealed details about the location of the gun—details only the killer would know.
The Confession
Under pressure from Jane and Lisbon, Daniel eventually confessed. He had gone to the farm to confront Richard, but their argument escalated. In the heat of the moment, Daniel accidentally shot Richard. Panicking, he staged the scene to look like a suicide, hoping to divert suspicion.
The Resolution
As Daniel was handcuffed and led away, Jane leaned against the doorway, watching the sunset over Redwood Farm. Lisbon approached him:

- “I just helped him speak the truth,” Jane replied with his enigmatic smile.
They left the scene, restoring peace to Redwood Farm, where its secrets had finally been laid bare.
